Choosing a Safe Airline
July 05,2012

A question often asked by clients is how can I ascertain the safety of an airline?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the 2011 accident rate for Western-built jets was the lowest in aviation history, surpassing the previous mark set in 2010.

In 2011 there was one accident involving a hull loss every 2.7 million flights, a hull loss is an accident in which the aircraft is destroyed or not subsequently repaired.

Safety by the numbers

  • 2.8 billion people flew safely on 38 million flights
  • 11 hull loss accidents involving western built jets
  • 5 fatal hull loss accidents involving western built jets
  • 22 fatal accidents (all aircraft types)
  • 486 fatalities compared to 786 in 2010

The accident rate for Africa improved by 56% in 2010 but was still the worst performing region in the industry, (this trend seems likely to be repeated in 2012). IOSA carriers in Africa had a zero hull loss in 2011.

From the data shown above it is clear that choosing an IOSA registered airline improves the safety odds and it is for that reason that Pinpoint Aviation Solutions uses the IOSA status of a carrier as one of the key criteria for recommendation and for assessing aviation safety.
